This season, fashion birds all have wind under their feathers. Sashaying between laid-back street and opulent exaggeration, these fluffy 1920s details are making a striking comeback. Spotted all over the the Autumn Winter 2017-2018 catwalks, feathers are finally just about to conquer ready-to-wear, as they did with haute couture years ago.
Sure, the looks at Balenciaga’s are pure (but beautiful) exaggeration. Wrapped in fluffy feathers from head to toe, the models nearly disappeared underneath the thick pillow-like layers. But the discreet feather details we spotted on sleeves at Alexander McQueen’s, or the little plumes embroidered all over the feathery dresses at Calvin Klein’s, showed us that winds of change are in the air.
Feathers are becoming street-friendly! The proof of this was that the feather-embellished skirts and dresses at Miu Miu’s and J.W. Anderson’s did not trigger any feeling of glamorous Twenties style: in fact, they looked as cool and as laid-back as they could possibly be. Feathers blend in with new fabrics, simply getting applied onto cotton, leather and linen – a new mix that makes us look at feathers in a fresh, new way. We would totally wear those pieces during the day! And for all those who still need a little time to get used to this new fluffy material in their wardrobes, there are a lot of cute feather-embellished shoes and bags, too.
